Aloha!
I've been teaching Belly Dance, Bollywood, & Flamenco for over two decades.
Recently, I've taken up Hula as it has some moves similar to Belly Dance & Bollywood.
However, rather than being an asset, it has turned out to be quite a challenge.
Doing a step one way for 20 years is not easy to master in a different style.
This challenge inspired me to learn & add Hula, which means 'dance' in Hawaiian, to my dance training.
I was especially attracted to the symbolism of the lovely Hula hand gestures accompanied by swaying hips.
These include the Sun, Moon, rain, stars, flowers, ocean, & many more.
This photo above was taken at Montreal costume fashion shoot in 1980!
Little did I know back then...!
This drawing below is from 1974. It was part of a series of international dancers I drew as a kid (obviously).
Look at those feet and how I misspelled "Hawaiian"!
The funny thing is that I made up that name not knowing any Hawaiian.
Fifty years later, I Googled it for fun & found out it actually means something;
'Kanawa' means "Canada Goose Outlet" & 'Marani' means "summer."
